# General Discount Codes

One discount code shared by everyone who receives it. How to create one in Recart and add it to your popups and SMS messages.

A general discount code is one code that everyone gets, like `WELCOME10`. Customers type it at checkout, or it's applied for them when they click a link connected to the discount.

### When to use a general code

* **It's the same for everyone**, so it's easy to remember and to mention in your popup and message copy
* **You can reuse it** across follow-up messages in the same flow
* **It works everywhere**: automated flows, campaign flows and popups
* **Any discount type works**: amount off products, amount off order, buy X get Y or free shipping

If you want each subscriber to get their own code that can't be shared, use [unique codes](/discounts/unique-discount-codes.md) instead.

### Create a general code

1. Go to [**Discounts**](https://app.recart.com/discounts) and click **Create new**, then **New discount**
2. Choose the **Discount type**, select **General** under **Discount code customization** and click **Continue**. General codes don't need a placement
3. Enter the **Discount code** customers will use at checkout, and a **Discount name** for your own reference
4. Set the discount value, scheduling and conditions
5. Click **Create discount**. Recart creates the code in your Shopify store

For every field in the form, see [Create & Manage Discount Codes](/discounts/create-discount-codes-in-recart.md).

{% hint style="info" %}
**Already have the code in Shopify?** If you type a code that already exists in your Shopify store, Recart tells you and offers to import it instead. You can also import it from **Create new** → **Import from Shopify**.
{% endhint %}

### Add a general code to an SMS message

1. In the flow or campaign editor, click the **%** (Add discount code) icon in the message toolbar
2. Select your code in the **Discount code** panel. It's inserted into your message
3. Optional: to apply the code automatically at checkout, add a link with the link icon and use **Connect link to discount (optional)** to connect it to your discount

Don't delete the discount item from your message. Recart uses it to insert the code when the message is sent.

### Add a general code to a popup

In the popup editor, go to the **Success step** and click **Add discount code**, then select your code. Subscribers see the code as soon as they opt in.

### Edit a general code

Open the code from the Discounts list to change its name, value, conditions or dates, then click **Update**. The code itself can't be changed after it's created. To use a different code, create a new one or duplicate this one, and swap it into your popups and messages.

### Best practices

* **Use a code just for Recart.** A code that isn't advertised in other channels, like email or ads, keeps your Recart reporting clean
* **Use one code per offer.** Duplicate the discount when you change an offer, so each offer's performance stays separate
* **Mention the offer in your copy**, like "15% off with code WELCOME15", so subscribers know what they're getting

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.recart.com/discounts/general-discount-codes.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
