If you’re using Attentive for SMS or email marketing, you can easily sync subscribers collected through Recart - including phone numbers, email addresses, and custom attributes - directly into your Attentive account.
There are a few extra steps required to complete the integration, including generating credentials through a Marketplace App and requesting a Signup Source ID from your Attentive CSM.
This article outlines everything you need to connect your Recart opt-in tools to Attentive and begin syncing subscribers.
Table of Contents
Overview of How the Integration Works
Once the integration is active:
-
Recart will push all new SMS and/or email subscribers captured through your popups into Attentive.
-
Data sent includes phone number, email address, UTM parameters, and any custom attributes like first name or location (if collected).
-
Attentive requires a Signup Source ID to activate the sync.
-
By default, Attentive uses a double opt-in process, which can cause subscribers to receive a second SMS confirmation.
-
To avoid this, you can request that your Attentive CSM enable single opt-in for this source.
What You’ll Need Before Connecting
To connect Recart to Attentive, you will need:
-
A Marketplace App API Key, generated in your Attentive account
-
A Signup Source ID (also called Signup Unit ID), provided by your Attentive Client Strategy Manager (CSM)
-
Single Opt-in to be enabled by your CSM
-
Screenshots of your popup with legal language visible, which may be required by your CSM to verify compliance
Note: The Signup Source ID cannot be created through the Attentive interface. It must be provisioned and connected to your app by your CSM.
How to Generate Your Attentive API Key
-
Log in to your Attentive account.
-
Navigate to Apps > Marketplace Apps.
-
Click Create New App.
-
Enter a name like “Recart Popup Integration”.
- Enable the following permissions:
-
-
Subscriber Write Access
-
Custom Attributes Write Access
-
6. Click Create.
7. Copy the API Key shown - this key will only appear once.
Be sure to save your key immediately, as it won’t be retrievable later.
Requesting a Signup Source ID and Single Opt-In
You will need to email your Attentive CSM to:
-
Request creation of a Signup Source (Signup Unit)
-
Ask that the source be linked to your App
-
Ask for Single Opt-in to be enabled
Attentive may require that you attach screenshots of your popup showing clear consent language. If you’re unsure how to phrase this request, feel free to reach out to Recart at support@recart.com. We’ll be happy to assist you or provide a suggested template to send to your CSM.
Connecting Recart to Attentive
Once you have both your API Key and Signup Source ID:
-
Log in to your Recart Dashboard
-
Go to Integrations > Attentive
-
Click Activate
-
Paste in your API Key
-
Paste in your Signup Source ID
-
Click Connect
Your integration is now live. Recart will automatically sync subscribers into Attentive based on your configuration.
Understanding Double vs. Single Opt-In
By default, Attentive uses a double opt-in process, meaning subscribers must confirm their signup by replying to a second SMS message. This can reduce conversion rates and is often unnecessary if your popup already collects and logs compliant opt-ins.
Recart already timestamps consent at the time of opt-in, and the popup can include all required legal language. If your CSM approves, you can request to use single opt-in instead -allowing subscribers to be added directly to your lists without a second confirmation.
If your CSM does not approve single opt-in, subscribers will receive an additional SMS requesting them to confirm their subscription.
Managing the Integration
-
You can enable or disable the Attentive integration at any time from the Integrations page in your Recart dashboard.
-
To update your API Key or Signup Source ID, click Change next to the integration and re-enter the correct values.
-
Recart will stop syncing data immediately if the integration is turned off or the API credentials are invalid.
